Are Students at Classical Schools Sheltered?
As a parent of young children, finding a good Christian school was a top priority for me. I was raised in a home with two public educators and attended public school myself. Even though I had a relatively good experience with the government school system, I recognized a new cultural shift that would eventually target my kids and point them towards a godless, hedonistic worldview. Although I knew it would become necessary to find a private school at some point, I was shocked to discover just how soon that would be.
When our oldest child was ready for kindergarten, we decided to enroll her in the public school across the street out of convenience and to save money for the later years when it “really mattered.” After all, they wouldn’t try to indoctrinate a five-year-old, right? Well, imagine my surprise to discover an entire LGBTQ agenda hidden within the curriculum after just a few months. It was only brought to my attention because my daughter came home happily exclaiming: “Guess what? Did you know that a girl can marry a girl? Isn’t it cool that someone can have TWO moms?!” I was completely shocked that this (and more) was being taught at such a young age! I felt foolish because I assumed that her teacher was a Christian just because she had attended a Christian college. In a conversation with her teacher and principal, it was revealed that units like these were “top-down” from the district and essentially out of their hands. It was then that we started our search for a Christian school.
After some research, we came upon the option of a Classical Christian school. We didn’t really know what that entailed, but we were intrigued. Upon further investigation, we discovered that this was what we wanted for our kids. Our children would get a world-class education and be in an environment that would nurture their souls and help them grow in God’s truth.
Classical schools do not aim to shelter students from cultural realities. They ensure that students have a firm foundation in the word of God before introducing controversial social topics in an age-appropriate manner. Teachers at classical schools help students navigate difficult issues and view them through the lens of scripture. My goal as a mom and employee at my kids’ beloved classical school is to guide the children in my care to love the Lord and grow them in their faith. As they mature, I want to equip them to be ready to defend Jesus and take on worldly pressures with grace and eloquence. I am grateful that our classical school is helping to accomplish that!
